The picture is not a lie, this week we are heading in an interesting direction and grilling up some veggie kabobs and drinking some Chardonnay. The entire menu ended up being a bit more along the lines of veggie kabobs with sides of pesto chicken and pasta salad, but the veggies were the main focus for the pairing. The prep was easy, I picked up my veggies pre-skewered, but cutting up your own veggies is way more fun and you can pick and choose what you put on them; the ones I picked up were stacked with squash, zucchini, onion, sweet red pepper and earthy green pepper all held together with corn on the cob; pretty solid combination, but I would have put in some mushrooms myself. My wife then gave me the idea to season all the veggies in a bath of balsamic vinegar and olive oil with a mix of various spices and leave them to marinate for about 2 days, rotating them a couple times in the seasoning bath before grilling just to be sure they end up being extra awesome. The wine pairing was the Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay, light & fresh flavors of apple and citrus and a subtle oak character makes up the main flavor profile, and the dryness is not overwhelming like most Chardonnays that have seen some oak aging. The final cooked pairing was great, the veggies mix of sweet and earthy with a bit of biting, vegetalness really melded with the Chardonnays stainless steel fermented crispness and the sharp & creamy Chardonnay finish from the limited oak aging. In case you were interested, the pesto chicken and pasta salad also made a great companion with the wine and veggies, but I was more surprised by the veggies, especially since I am very not an herbivore, and their paired flavors going great with the Chardonnay. I can honestly say I have not been this pleased, or surprised, with a wine pairing I've done since my wedding...
*Fun side note: The Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay is currently on sale for $7.99 from the original price of $11.99, while supplies last. That is another great reason to drink it!*
**Also, in case I have missed mentioning this to anyone, or you have not seen it in some of the older wine posts, we offer a 10% discount on all mix and match 12 bottle cases of non-wine. However, all sale wines do count towards the 12 bottles, so that is a great plus.**
