More than twenty people in the last three months have unsolicited told me how tasty the beers from Toppling Goliath are. So there I was a week from Christmas with no gift ideas for my fellow beer geek sister who had done some really supportive things for me over the last year. On a Monday night over a tulip glass of home brew German Pilsner I decided that she would love it if I picked up some growlers from this up and coming little brewery. Toppling Goliath does not send their beers to Minnesota yet, but has plans to in the next year. Their brewery is about a two and a half hour drive from south Minneapolis. It's a totally reasonable weekend day trip.
Six days later, a relaxing Sunday drive down one lane highways got me Decorah, Iowa. As I got into town just across the Minnesota border, my iPhone navigation lead me to a modern looking red building on top of a small hill. I parked in the lot and walked in to what was a room filled with a group of brewery owners, employees, and regular customers filling the bar area. Very modern looking bar interior with just the right size for a decent amount of tables without seeming cramped.
As I grabbed a seat at a table and walked up to take a look at the chalk board of brews on tap and was happy to see Pseudo Sue, their Citra hopped pale ale on the list. I ordered one of these and was not disappointed. Big tangerine and catty hop flavor backed up by a slight white bread malt character was everything I had heard about and better. My next trip to the bar was to order three growlers of Pseudo Sue, and a growler and a pint of their Golden Nugget IPA on blind faith. Golden Nugget had just enough bitterness and resin hop flavor. Got to chat with one of the owners and another guy at the bar for a bit before I left. Great atmosphere and service here, but it was time to hit the road again to get home for the holidays.
I hope everyone had a happy holiday season. I had a blast checking out Toppling Goliath and sharing their brews over the holiday season. Can't wait to see them distribute here in Minnesota. I brought some Pseudo Sue back to Heritage and we had some on Christmas Eve before we closed early and brought the rest home to share with family.
