Some of you may have gotten a chance to try some of Big Wood's Imperial IPAs either at festivals or by trying Bad Axe which has recently gone on tap some places. Good news for everyone - their Imperial IPA is coming to cans in early to mid April. Ahead of the release we were lucky enough to secure a can to see how it stacks up. Needless to say it was exciting to try this as Ty their brewer is well known for making some great hoppy beers. Anyone remember his oak barrel of Double IPA at a recent Beer Dabbler?

Bad Axe pours out a slightly hazy light orange into a snifter. I get a full finger of white head that stays nicely leaving sticky lacing. The smell is marmalade and orange while the descriptor bright comes to mind. The flavor is more of the same. There is a light but substantial malt flavor that gives way to resin and marmalade hop character. Bitterness is there but not over the top. It finishes dry with a clean fermentation profile. I was really impressed with this one. We will have cans for sale in mid April and a tasting with Ty, their brewer and Brett their sales rep on Thursday April 18th, from 5-7 with this beer and their Morning wood available for sale and sample. The Big Wood guys might even be bringing a special treat that night to sample.

It's always fun to help promote a brewery when you have a relationship with the people behind it, but it makes it all that much easier when that brewery is making really tasty beer. We are really excited about Big Wood and their plans going forward!

Update: Our tasting with Big Wood got pushed back to Thursday, May 9th, as they are having issues with label approval. We are now expecting to see cans of Bad Axe by May 3rd. Fingers crossed!
