In honor of our Great Lakes tasting this Thursday (7/18) from 5-7 I decided it was time to revisit their seasonal Double IPA after being extremely impressed with both their new Alchemy Hour Double IPA and Rye of the Tiger Rye IPA this year. Steppin' that hops game up.
Lake Erie Monster pours out quite a bit lighter that I remembered as a dark golden color into my trusty Surly pint glass. The smell is bitter grapefruit all up in my face. I don't remember this beer being like this at all. A few years back I remember this being very malty for the style with not much hop aroma. Maybe they changed the recipe or I had gotten an old bottle in the past.
Oh well, on to the flavor. Again, there's a big bitter grapefruit hop presence going on with what I would describe as only the slightest caramel malt character as the beer remains really crisp on the finish. I'm really happy I revisited this one. We've got a few four packs left and if it's around we might even sneak this monster into the tasting.
