Bier de Garde is the less modernly sexy cousin of the Saison and is seriously under brewed. This rustic style features caramel malts and characteristic musty yeast character. I was really excited to see Flat Earth bring back their take on the style recently.
Ovni pours out a deep golden amber color with a distinct amount of white head. The smell is a bit of earthy hop character along with a slight breadiness. The flavor is a healthy dose of spicy green hops up front with a momderate caramel flavor coming through on the finish. A slight earthy yeast character is present but a bit overpowered. This comes across a unique and hoppy American take on the style that works well. I could see this drinking really well about a year from now as the hops fade and it takes on a bit more traditional dry yeast flavor. Yay for Bier de Garde!
