Bell's has a new seasonal that is called a Golden Rye Ale. I wish they would rename the beer Hoppy Rye Pale Ale, so that people knew what a grassy, crisp hop character this beer has. Bell's Smitten pours out a thick, foggy gold color into a snifter with less than half and inch of white head that leaves nice lacing. The aroma is slight citrus and fresh rye bread. The flavor lends a punch of grassy hop flavor up front that gives way to a substantial black pepper spice character from the rye. The flavor reminds me of a lighter, slightly more citrusy version of Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye. There is a slightly lingering hop bitterness on the finish. The mouthfeel is very thick with moderate carbonation. Smitten makes for a surprisingly refreshing rye beer as the grassy herbal hop character complements the bready pepper notes of the rye well. I would definitely pick up a six pack of this.
